Guests who’ve rented our holiday apartments often ask: “What else is there to see and do in this area?” One of our top recommendations is the historic city of Cartagena – a fascinating destination just a short drive away.
Cartagena is a true treasure trove for history lovers – a city over 2,000 years old where every era has left its mark.
Founded in 227 BC by Carthaginian general Asdrúbal the Fair, Cartagena began as an important naval and military base. In 209 BC, Roman general Scipio Africanus conquered the city, renaming it Carthago Nova. Under Roman rule, it became one of the Mediterranean’s most important ports.
In the centuries that followed, Cartagena was ruled by various powers – Visigoths, Byzantines, and Muslims. In 1245, Christian forces reclaimed the city, and by the 18th century it had become a key naval base for Spain.
Today, Cartagena is known for its Roman theater, beautiful port, historic festivals, and vibrant mix of cultures. You’ll also be charmed by the lace-like wrought iron balconies of old town apartments and period architecture that give every walk through the city a special atmosphere.
If you love history, appreciate architecture, and enjoy strolling through streets filled with stories, Cartagena is the perfect day trip. It’s an experience you won’t forget – Roman columns, ancient fortresses, a sunny harbor, and authentic Spanish character.
